A lingering effect of surviving COVID-19 for many has been hair loss.

The physical and emotional stress after a case of COVID-19 has lead to a reversible hair loss condition called telogen effluvium.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not include hair loss on its list of COVID-19 symptoms, doctors say there’s compelling evidence that it can be a long-term effect from the illness.

This form of hair loss is known to occur a few months after stressful events such as emotional distress, major surgery, or high fever.

What exactly is telogen effluvium?

A reversible condition in which hair falls out after a stressful experience.

That stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase.

Within a few months, those hairs can fall out. Types of stress can include surgery, childbirth, and serious illness.

Hair loss is always the main symptom.

In many cases, no treatment is needed and the hair often grows back when the stress goes away.

The upside.

It's usually self-treatable.

Requires a medical diagnosis.

Lab tests or imaging is rarely required.

Resolves within months.

On a video posted on Twitter, the “Charmed” star showed large clumps of strands coming out of her brush after running it through her wet hair.

“This is my hair loss from COVID-19. Wear a mask.” said Milano, who tested positive for coronavirus antibodies after having symptoms of the disease.
